How a Game Is Won
Baseball has no clock. It has innings, outs, and however long it takes to get twenty-seven of them.
Nine Innings
Each side bats once an inning, three outs to a half. The home team bats last and only bats the ninth if it needs to.
Extra Innings
Level after nine and the game keeps going. Play continues until one side leads at the end of a complete inning.
Doubleheader
Two games between the same clubs on the same day. Bullpens get stretched thin and a season series can swing in an afternoon.
Postseason Series
Best-of-three, five or seven. Rotations shorten, every bullpen decision magnifies, and one game can end a season.
Leagues
From the Bronx to Busan
The competitions that fill the calendar, across four continents.
Markets
More Than the Final Score
Baseball is a game of matchups and numbers. These are the angles it opens up.
Moneyline
The straight call — which club wins the game, however wide the margin ends up.
Run Line
Baseball's handicap, usually a run and a half. The favourite must win by two or more.
Total Runs
Read the park, the wind and the pitching matchup, then take the game over or under.
First 5 Innings
Settles on the score after five — the stretch where the starters are still on the mound.
Home Runs
Who goes deep, and how often the ball leaves the yard across the whole game.
Pitcher Strikeouts
The starter's punch-out total — the market that tracks pure stuff on the night.
Player Hits
Hits recorded by a batter, where a favourable matchup can matter more than form.
Player of the Game
The individual performance that ends up deciding how the night is remembered.
